Which AI tools this guide covers
Please note: This site is only a guide to help people understand. Consult your IT, security and/or privacy department for clarification.
Being listed here is not an endorsement or a recommendation. Tools appear in a fixed order that is not a ranking.
How we choose
- A small nonprofit can sign up on its own. It can also join through a published nonprofit program. No custom contract is needed.
- Staff who are not technical can use it to draft, summarize or organize writing. Open-weight models are included because a host can offer them this way.
- The company posts its privacy, data-use and pricing details on its own website. That way, every fact here has a source.
- Nonprofit-specific tools must be built and sold mainly for nonprofits, or for grant seekers including nonprofits (we say so where it is unclear). They must describe their AI features on their own website.
- No tool is listed because of payment, partnership or popularity alone. Nobody pays to be listed.
Frontier model providers
Companies that build their own large AI models and offer a chat assistant. These were the guide's first five.
- Claude (Anthropic): Frontier model provider with a self-serve chat assistant and a published nonprofit offer.
- ChatGPT (OpenAI): Frontier model provider with a self-serve chat assistant and a published nonprofit offer.
- Gemini (Google): Frontier model provider whose assistant is offered with Google Workspace, including its nonprofit editions.
- Grok (SpaceXAI): Frontier model provider with a self-serve chat assistant and published business plans.
- Llama (Meta): Open-weight model family that hosts can offer to nonprofits. Shown with one documented host.
Other general AI assistants
Widely available AI assistants that a nonprofit might already have, or be offered, through other software.
- Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft): General AI assistant offered with Microsoft 365, with a free tier, published prices and a published nonprofit offer.
- Perplexity (Perplexity AI): AI search assistant with a free plan, published Enterprise prices and a published way for nonprofits to request a discount.
- Mistral Le Chat (Mistral AI): General AI assistant with a free plan and published prices. Mistral has renamed it Vibe, and its own pages use both names.
Tools built for nonprofits
Software made for nonprofits, such as donor or grant tools, that includes AI features.
- Givebutter (Givebutter): Online fundraising platform built for nonprofits, with a free account and AI features (Givebutter Magic) described on its own website.
- Grantable (Grantable): AI grant-writing workspace with a free plan. It serves all grant seekers, so whether it is sold mainly to nonprofits is unclear. It is listed with that note.
Which tools fit which needs
This shows what each company says its tool does. Tools appear in the guide's fixed order, and being listed is not a recommendation. Check each one against your own needs and your organization's rules.
