Communications and storytelling

Write alt text for your photos

Makes your images understandable to people who use screen readers.

Lower risk: public info only — Describe the photo in words yourself; don't upload photos of clients or minors into a tool without permission.

Please note: This site is only a guide to help people understand. Consult your IT, security and/or privacy department for clarification.

Before you start, gather

Write [YOUR DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTO] yourself while looking at the image, noting who or what matters, and set [WEB PAGE OR POST] to where it will appear. Leave out names of clients or minors.

Starter prompt

I will describe a photo and you will write alt text of under 125 characters for it. Be specific and neutral, do not start with 'image of', and mention anything that matters to the story. Photo description: [YOUR DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTO]. Context where it appears: [WEB PAGE OR POST]. Describe only what my description says; if a detail such as clothing or setting is not stated, leave it out instead of guessing.

Paste the prompt into your AI tool first, then replace the placeholders with your own details. Don't use real names of clients or donors.

Open an AI tool

You are leaving this guide. Copy the prompt first, then open a tool. The link goes to the website of the company named on each link, in a new tab. That company's terms and privacy policy apply there. Paste the prompt in, then replace the placeholders with your own details. Don't enter real names or confidential details.

Check the result

Compare the alt text with the actual photo and check that it leaves out guesses about people's identities or feelings.

What it might get wrong

Added visual details not in your description, such as ages, emotions, ethnicity, a smile or a location. Alt text may also run past the 125-character limit you asked for, or repeat the caption.
