Practice a hard conversation by role-play, with made-up details

Lets you rehearse a tough talk in a safe space before the real one.

Lower risk: public info only — Invent the details; don't use real names or true personnel situations.

Please note: This site is only a guide to help people understand. Consult your IT, security and/or privacy department for clarification.

Before you start, gather

Invent [MADE-UP NAME] and [MADE-UP ISSUE] from a general type of situation, never a real person or case. Afterward, ask HR how your real process works and compare it with what you practiced.

Starter prompt

Let's role-play a difficult workplace conversation. I'm a manager at a nonprofit and I need to talk with a fictional employee, [MADE-UP NAME], about [MADE-UP ISSUE]. You play the employee and respond realistically. Keep everything fictional, and do not state what law or HR policy requires; say CHECK WITH HR instead of guessing. After every few turns, pause and give me feedback on my tone and clarity. Start by asking me how I'd open.

Paste the prompt into your AI tool first, then replace the placeholders with your own details. Don't use real names of clients or donors.

You are leaving this guide. Copy the prompt first, then open a tool. The link goes to the website of the company named on each link, in a new tab. That company's terms and privacy policy apply there. Paste the prompt in, then replace the placeholders with your own details. Don't enter real names or confidential details.

Check the result

Treat it as practice only; real situations need your HR process, and may need HR or legal advice.

What it might get wrong

A fictional employee who reacts more neatly than a real person would. Feedback that treats a rehearsed script as the right one. A stated rule about what a manager may legally say.
