Donor and supporter relations
Analyze your full donor database with names and gift amounts
Looks tempting for finding patterns fast, but there is a safer way to get the same answers.
Don't paste this into an AI tool — Names, gift amounts and contact details are private supporter data and should not be pasted into a chat tool.
A safer way: Describe the columns (for example 'donor ID, gift date, gift amount') and ask the AI for a spreadsheet formula or analysis method, then run it yourself on your own computer.
Please note: This site is only a guide to help people understand. Consult your IT, security and/or privacy department for clarification.
Before you start, gather
Copy the exact headers from your export for [LIST OF COLUMN NAMES], and state your question in [WHAT YOU WANT TO LEARN]. Paste the header row only, never donor rows. Decide how your team defines a retained donor before you ask.
Starter prompt
I have a spreadsheet of gifts with these columns: [LIST OF COLUMN NAMES]. I want to find [WHAT YOU WANT TO LEARN], such as our donor retention rate (the share of donors who give again). Do not ask for my data. Explain step by step which spreadsheet formulas or pivot table to use, and how to read the results. Use only the column names I list. Do not make up example results.
Check the result
Test the formula on a few rows you can check by hand before trusting the results across the whole file.
What it might get wrong
Formulas that look right but use a wrong column or retention definition, and sample figures it invents for illustration that you could mistake for your own results.
